The Way I Knew

The way I knew with her was
When I was driving her around upstate We saw a turtle crossing sign
She slowed down in case

She always slowed down in case

Even furthermore, she prompted ME to stop the car that day when it happened

There was a turtle in the middle of the road, the 45 MPH sign glaring

Do you see this is the worst place for a turtle to cross, which of course, is where they do

Before that second; I never considered myself an animal lover but for her, I would have stopped for her pet rock

So she got me to stop, and she got herself out of that car

She picked up that turtle and walked him across the street, placing him safely to scurry to the water

Getting back in, I teased her not to touch me until the turtle germs were gone, but that's really when I knew

That's the way I knew she was some kind of different, so of course I wanted her

I loved her

I didn't mean to, but I did

I mean it's not every girl that would stop for that turtle

Before her, I wouldn't have

But for her, I'd stop that car over and over again

Even now, without her

When I see any helpless creature trying to cross

I feel her touching my hand lightly on that steering wheel, saying "Baby, you gotta stop"

That's the way I knew she was different

She left everyone and everything better

Even after her, I stop for the turtles

We all do
